What a police station rep is and does

A police station rep gives legal advice at the police station on behalf of a criminal defence firm. The Police Station Register Arrangements 2025 define an Accredited Representative as “an individual who is registered with the Legal Aid Agency following successful completion of the Police Station Representatives Accreditation Scheme”. The SRA says the aim of the scheme is “to accredit non-solicitors to advise and assist suspects being held at a police station”.

PACE Code C counts registered reps as a “solicitor” for the purposes of the Code (paragraph 6.12), and Note 6D sets the role: “The solicitor’s only role in the police station is to protect and advance the legal rights of their client.”

Reps are instructed by firms and must be supervised. The Register Arrangements note that “the Agency contracts with firms and not Accredited Representatives independently”. Probationary reps cannot take duty cases or indictable-only cases (Specification 9.24 and 9.29).

How to instruct a police station rep

  1. 1. Search by county or station

Use the search box, a county page or a station page to see the accredited reps who list that area.

  2. 2. Check the rep is on the Police Station Register

The Specification says that when you delegate work to a rep, "you must ensure that the specific Representative is on the Police Station Register" (para 9.26(b)). The register is the one the Legal Aid Agency maintains (Code C 6.12; Register Arrangements 1.1).

  3. 3. Contact the rep directly

Phone or message the rep from their profile. There is no booking fee and no agency in the middle: you agree the instruction with the rep.

  4. 4. Give the rep your supervising solicitor’s number

Before attending, "the Representative must have the telephone number of his or her supervising Solicitor (including an out of office hours number if appropriate)" (Spec 9.27). A rep must stay supervised while on the register (Register Arrangements 5.1).

  5. 5. Keep supervising the case

Your firm must "ensure that the specific Representative is appropriately supervised" (Spec 9.26(c)).

We check accreditation evidence at listing time; we do not supervise cases or guarantee ongoing status.

Police station reps: FAQ

What is a police station rep?+

A police station representative is someone on the Legal Aid Agency’s register who gives legal advice at the police station on behalf of a criminal defence firm. The Police Station Register Arrangements 2025 define an Accredited Representative as "an individual who is registered with the Legal Aid Agency following successful completion of the Police Station Representatives Accreditation Scheme". The SRA says the aim of the scheme is "to accredit non-solicitors to advise and assist suspects being held at a police station".

Does PACE Code C treat a rep as a solicitor?+

For the purposes of Code C, paragraph 6.12 says "solicitor" includes "an accredited or probationary representative included on the register of representatives maintained by the Legal Aid Agency". Code C Note 6D says "The solicitor’s only role in the police station is to protect and advance the legal rights of their client."

Can a probationary rep take any case?+

No. The Specification says "A Probationary Representative must not provide Police Station Advice and Assistance on an indictable only offence" (para 9.29), and duty work must be done by an Accredited Representative, "not by a Probationary Representative" (para 9.24). The Register Arrangements say the same: "Probationary Representatives must not take on duty cases or indictable only cases."

Who instructs a police station rep?+

A criminal defence firm, and the rep must be supervised. The Register Arrangements say "the Agency contracts with firms and not Accredited Representatives independently", and "A Police Station Representative must be supervised by a Supervising Solicitor whilst on the Police Station Register" (para 5.1).

How does PoliceStationRepUK check reps?+

We check accreditation evidence at listing time; we do not supervise cases or guarantee ongoing status. The instructing firm must still make sure the rep is on the Police Station Register (Spec 9.26(b)).

I have been arrested, or someone I know has. Can I book a rep here?+

This directory is for criminal defence firms, and it is not the police. If you are at a police station, tell the custody officer you want legal advice: the Notice of Rights and Entitlements says "The Police Custody Officer must ask you if you want legal advice. This is free." The Specification confirms there is no means test for police station advice: "There is no Financial Eligibility Test for this Unit of Work" (para 9.9).
